
There are over 150 different types of headaches, but today we’re breaking down five of the most common ones I see in clinic — plus how myotherapy can help.
We’ve all had a headache at some point — some are a mild annoyance, while others can stop us in our tracks. But did you know that not all headaches are created equal?
1. Tension-Type Headaches
These are the most common kind. Think dull, aching pain, often like a tight band around the forehead or back of the head and neck. They’re usually linked to stress, poor posture, and muscle tension—especially in the shoulders, neck, and jaw.
What helps: Trigger point therapy, stretching, postural correction, and stress-reducing techniques can make a huge difference.
2. Migraines
Migraines go beyond a regular headache. They often come with throbbing pain (usually one-sided), nausea, sensitivity to light/sound, and sometimes visual disturbances (auras). They can last hours or even days.
What helps: While they can’t always be ‘cured,’ reducing triggers, improving posture, managing jaw tension, and regular myotherapy sessions can reduce frequency and intensity.
3. Cervicogenic Headaches
These start in the neck and refer pain to the head—often felt on one side, wrapping from the base of the skull to the eye or forehead. They’re typically caused by dysfunction in the neck joints and surrounding muscles.
What helps: Targeted myotherapy, joint mobilisation, dry needling, and exercises to support neck stability and mobility.
4. TMJ-Related Headaches
The jaw joint (TMJ) plays a surprising role in head pain. Clenching, grinding, stress, or poor jaw alignment can lead to headaches felt around the temples, behind the eyes, or down the sides of the face.
What helps: Intraoral jaw release, breathwork, posture resets, and lifestyle strategies can relieve tension and reduce frequency.
5. Cluster Headaches
These are less common but extremely intense—sharp, burning pain usually around one eye, happening in cycles or “clusters.” They often strike at night and may come with watery eyes or a droopy eyelid.
What helps: While these often require medical management, myotherapy may support general muscle relaxation and stress reduction, which can play a small role in comfort during flare-ups.
